Hi people, Wonderin if you could give a bit of help and info on my 2003 Shadow ACE? All newbie stuff I guess but hey, if ya dont ask ya dont know, right? When I bought my shadow I got a set of Vance and Hines pipes thrown in. Old owner told me he had to put standard pipes back on for RWC. He said he never ajusted anything when he bought the pipes new, just put them on, so I guess if I want them back on I should to do a couple of things, right? So here goes the questions?? Why do I need bigger jets in carby? I was told it would stop the backfireing but is this really needed? How much roughly to do the job? and secondly, why is there a need to change the air cleaner? Also valve clearances, what does this mean? I was told to get them ajusted every 18k but why?, What happens if i go over 18k?? Quoted about $120 is that reasonable? Why does this newbie wanna know all this stuff??? I am going to book my girl in for a service soon and thinking of putting the V/H pipes back on and getting valve clearances done at the same time. Just wanna go in a bit educated! Any info would be appreciated and thanks!! Chrisso

Look into a dynojet rejet kit. Avoids the need for changing the carby. With the Dynojet and new pipes fitted, having a high performance intake filter works better too. They are cleanable and rarely need replacement.

K&N air filter is the one i think lonewolf is referring to, rejecting is needed because with the V&H pipes on and air filter the carb will be sucking in more air so you need to adjust air to fuel [carby] best done on dyno-tune as most mac's will tell you they do it by guess work. as for popping [exhaust] most will tell you that you will not eliminate this completely but close to it. it do's not harm the bike. i had mine done by local shop but ended up using way more fuel was told dyno-tune would be the only way to get it spot on.[have booked mine in].
hope this has been of some help. ;D ;D ;D

Certainly wont hurt to do the valves mate. A lot of people do the rejetting as it makes the bike perform with the pipes. Quite often you will get popping and backfiring .Getting the right airflow, fuel mixture setup wil make your bike a lot happier. The valves will go out of sink overtime so they do need retuning. I,ve had mine done twice now and it quitens the engine down. Go into shadowaero750.com/. Look through their mod section and read up on the rejetting. They have the older carby bikes like yours and get top miles from them. cheers Ray

Here,s one for you Chrisso; forums.delphiforums.com/strictlyace750/startHere is a quote from an ACE rider.; 44376.1 I recently installed new V&H Cruzers on my 2001 ACE along with a K&N Filter. It sounded beautiful with the exception of a lot of backfiring on deceleration. I rejetted and it seems to have renewed life!! I would not hesitate to recommend them. That is all

Thanks guys, for your time, i can now walk in to the mechanic with at least some knowledge I will book in and get a 'service' and the 'valve clearances' done first, and leave the exhaust, jetting and air cleaner for a while. I just found out camper-van needs the clutch done, and as its our only vehicle, becomes a priority I know, bike should come first but hey, i need a something to run around the better half... or do I ? ;D >evil grin< ;D .added>Thanks for the link Ray, be spending some time there!

With the new pipes & rejetting & better air filter, what would be the expected economy from a VT750? I'm getting just on 20kl per liter (with original air filter though), is tht reasonable or would I get better with a new type of filter?

Depends on you mac,or your right hand! Got the mods and get just under 20 in traffic/short runs,as much as 24 on a long run at a constant speed

Whether you do is as Moe said, that wrist comes into play when the HWY beckons. Iff i stick o me speed limit on long runs i easliy get another 30 ks min out of the tank. Cheers Ray

Hi, I picked up my VT400 yesterday with the new V&H Cruzer pipes and K&N air filter fitted, they look and sound great, honestly i wouldn't need them any louder. When i was riding home and sitting in a line of traffic, with my man behind me in the ute, he crept up close behind me and i started looking around for the other cruiser bike i could hear, it sounded like a big bike, then i realised i was having a blonde moment and in fact it was my bike!!!! ;D ;D When i went to finalise my account with Honda, I was in for a pleasant surprise. Although i was quoted $499 for the pipes and $70 for the sensors, and i was happy to pay that amount, they took a further $25 off. Not alot, but enough to buy myself a six pack of Jimmys to celebrate my new pipes. ;D ;D I also noticed the power difference in my bike straight away, as I have a fairly steep hill near my place, and I would usually knock it back a gear when going up it, but with the new pipes and air filter I actually found myself gaining speed and power with a little bit more throttle applied. ;D ;D So far I have not had any backfiring or popping on decelaration, so all in all i am extremely happy with the cruzers and look forward to going on a long ride this weekend, with the satisfaction other motorists will hear my presence.

MAC i have just had mine dyno tuned [vt750] i have V&H pipes,K&N filter, carb re-jetted and de-snorkelled and am getting about 29k's on highway and about 25 around town. as for valves being checked, was going to get that done as well, Machanic said not to worry they should not really change only get them checked if having a lot of trouble with idling. but i suppose it depends on who you talk to as to there ideas on that subject. all up it cost $240.00.
cheer's chris, [spinal].
