OK , so following on from this ... My Shadow's a 2012 model and I have to say , I actually like the sound it makes stock but I'd like *that* sound a little louder . Ray , I'd be really interested to know exactly what your guy did so maybe I could get someone to do the same for me , but on my side of the country.. Before everyone starts suggesting aftermarket pipes for me to buy , I understand that there are lots of great aftermarket systems available , I'm quite partial to the look of the V&H Shortshots , but most aftermarket pipes seem to have a "clatter" in their note which I don't really like . I'm also not keen on the flared look of the Cruzers ... not knocking anyone else here , they're just not the look I'm going for . I suppose the sound I'm hoping to achieve is something along the lines of my mates Harley Ultra Classic ...just a warm , loud , low rumble with no clatter or gunshot type artifacts. Suggestions? Cheers Trog

Hey Trog I've only ever heard one bike that sounds like a Harley and that's a Harley You need to find a metric bike you like the sound off and copy it.

Quite happy with the note it puts out,not over loud but cars do hear you now compared to stock. MRC is also happy . He took the origanal baffle fully out then after that i,m not quite sure. Been speaking to a local bloke here in Perth who runs a custom exhaust shop...he's almost impossible to find , likes to work by word of mouth only.. What I'd say Ray's guy did would be the same as what's being offered to me ( I think both our bikes are newer injected twin system ones , mines a 2012 anyways)for about the same price and is completely reversible... Basically he will cut the pipes behind the heat shields , remove the small diameter baffle tube which is in there standard and replace it with a larger one which has more and bigger holes in it and welds it back up ...thusly making the pipe louder but not something which will compete with aftermarket ones like V&H or Cobra , while retaining the "original parts" look and making the job of the noise police a bit more difficult cause they cant just look at the bike and tell it's been modded. If you get pulled over and have to go over the pits , he just puts your original baffles back in and you're set and laughing. Yes , the bigger baffles will affect the tune and a retune will be needed afterwards to stop the bike running lean and damaging pistons etc just the same as if you buy aftermarkets, but the cost of the mod is much less than buying new aftermarkets . Maybe not everyone's cup of tea ..but fine for me as all I want is the "original" sound a bit louder. Also , it seems from my research on the interwebs that both V&H and Cobra seriously dont recommend putting their pipes on any Shadows post 2009...I dont claim in any way to know why , but thats how it seems. Cheers Trog

I,ve never had mine retuned as yet but i must admit when the 4 deg , mod was done it made the bike better for popping that is.Nothing wrong now ,but will get it done one day . Still get 250 -300 k,s before the light comes on so it hasnt made a change to fuel . Cheers Ray

Just go with what you feel is how you want it sounding. I had standard. Did the mod. Then put on v&h. Went back to standard and lately went back to v&h with more baffle. While on the subject: Is it illegel to fit aftermarket pipes if they meet the db level? What happens if the factory pipes rust out and you can't buy new stock. My bike is a 2006. The things I wonder.......must be bored Daz

Over here the general response I've had when enquiring and other of my mates who've gone the aftermarket route have had from bike shops is that all aftermarket exhausts are technically illegal due to the way the ADR compliance rules are written ... It really seems to come down to what the police need to enforce and how actively they do it. We get the odd blitz on noise level over here , but they're generally pretty short lived. Cheers Trog

So, just to be sure I had some pipes and not open holes on the side of my bike, that a sparrow may accidentally fly into and choke on. I went and got these Cobra Streetrod Slashdowns. Purely because I am a nature lover and don't wish to see animals suffer.
