Decided to have a go.... firstly,, I'm NOT a mechanic but happy to read other peoples 'how to tips' balanced with reading the workshop manual!!! and the only real mechanical skill I have it knowing lefty loosey and righty tighty plus tighten all nuts/bolts by hand a few turns so as to not strip the threads. Armed with the ability to read :-) and my limited, simplistic mechanical knowledge I downloaded the above PFD, printed it and had a go. I'm proud to say I completed this task without issue (although, I'm yet to fire up the bike) but going slowly and taking my time to check and recheck I'm sure I've got this covered and my bike will fire up without issue. Ray gave me a nudge to get this done so I decided to give this a go whilst I was cleaning my bike. Easy to do just lots of disassembly of parts, all in all took me 1 full day from start to finish although, mind you this also included running an electrical connection to my smart phone holder so I can run my smart phone off 12v and LOTS of cleaning of parts as well as touch up painting. The front Cam Cover was a pain in the arse to get off & refit but after lots swearing and threatening to throw the bike off the nearest cliff It went on as if nothing was holding it back... arrggg I have a Sena SMH10 motorcycle Bluetooth music/phone/intercom headset and I wanted to run power to my smart phone whilst I'm running the bluetooth headset. To do a proper installation I decided to remove the tank so I could run a tidy line for the electrical wires and well....whilst the tank was off, I decided to remove the chrome plastic engine covers to give them a good clean...and whilst they were off I might as well check the valve clearance lol What started as a 12v install and clean Ended up as a valve clearance check and adjustment Glad it's done and I only needed 2 extra tools a 10mm allen wrench for the crankcase cover and feeler gauges. The other tools I had one would expect to find in most basically stocked home garages

Pete what was the clearance's like, were they ok or did you have to ADJ and at what mileage have you done this. i only ask because when i had my bike dyno-tunned i asked the mac about doing the value clearance and he said not to bother with it unless i am having trouble with the bike idling.
cheers,
spinal

I fit new plugs and set tappets every 10,000k's,but I'm sure they would be good for at least double, but if the tanks off, it only takes an hour max, after the first time, and you learn the knack to get the lids off

FRONT CYLINDER pretty much exactly the same as above? The owners manual maintenance schedule recommends checking valve clearance at 12 000Km, 24 000km & 36 000km essentially every 12K My bike had 20 000km on it when I checked. It was a PIA job only because getting the Cam Cover off was a miserable task and getting it back on was just as miserable. Next time I'll replace coolant because when the coolant hoses are removed there is plenty of room to remove the cam cover. I had no issue with the bike so this was only done because I was cleaning the bike and decided to take the plastic chrome covers off the top of the engine for cleaning and well.... one thing lead to another and before I knew it the cam cover was off, I was driving to supercheap auto for metric feeler gauges and as they say the rest is history :-) Cheers, Pete

So what did she go like mate . No probs i,d gather by that read . Yay.... ALL GOOD ;D Bike all back together again and best part....not a single nut/bolt left over (which after owning a twin turbo sports car is a nice change lol) Started the bike (with finger hovering over kill switch if an immediate shut down was required if strange rattling sounds happened but all was good) ALL GOOD and bike purred away with her typical vibrations and hefty exhaust note. Glad I did this even if to know the clearance was OK and even happier that bike started first time without issue. Went for a nice ride in the sun today covered about 90k's today and bike never skipped a beat and felt great. Glad it's done and glad it's over..... OH.... decided to take the bike back to the original Blue with White accents and I must admit I like the original blue over the carbon fibre look... I'll stick with the Blue/White but will change smaller parts to Carbon... Cheers, Pete

hi pete and all, apart from the fact that the manual says every 12000km,,,is there a tell tale sign that tappets need adjustment, obviously the tap tap sound but apart from that?...and is the point of it to improve performance as you are trying to optimise the way gasses and fuel enter and leave at the correct time through the correct size hole,,just bought my bike at 50000km so no idea if it needs to be done or has been done,,i suppose it does not seem to be that hard and worth a try although i wonder how much effect it has,as i would assume the valve condition (pitted etc ) would have a much greater effect but thats a head overhaul which I am not about to venture into.... Your clearance as you said were not that bad so obviously there was most likely not that significant improvemment that you were able to feel,am i correct? anyway any thoughts would be interesting.
