Hi all, thank you. Only just got my learners, so am very green, picked up my bike a week ago and am trying to get as much practice in as I can. I have a couple of really supportive friends/family with bikes, so am getting a lot of help. Managed my first solo ride yesterday, so that was a little exciting and as equally nerve wracking!! I have a couple of issues with the bike, but am taking it back to the dealer next week, so hopefully they will sort them out.

Welcome to the Nut House, Straight jackets to the left, group therapy to the right. Lol. I ride a 400 also, after 5 years and almost 90 000 km, I have had no major problem with it. This crazy bunch have been great to get to know and their advice has been terrific, enjoy the riding and hope to see you out with us real soon.

well my bike seems to not want to start in anything other than Neutral (with kick stand up/clutch in) and being a brand new rider, on my maiden ride, I stalled it over a billion times (no exaggeration!!) and each time, though I was in first gear, had to muck around finding neutral.... so i'm hoping it's something minor, like a dirty connection or something... I've sorta kinda mastered this throttle business.... so it's not as big an issue, but still I feel it's not exactly safe to get stuck at a set of traffic lights fiddling with my gears!!

Nothing wrong with the bike that's the way it is set up as a safety thing, so that you can't start it whilst in gear and you can't take off with the stand down Imagine giving it a bit of throttle on start up and the thing is in gear you'd end up on the ground and the bike upside down Frank

Mmm you have s problem then :: Should start in neutral with clutch out . Should start in gear with stand up .Stand down if Wont as it's a safety feature. Check the stand comes all the way up as some have been caught out with this .Iff not up all the way it doesn't start . There is s relay at top of stand ,check all wires are attached .Also on right side of clutch there is also two wires that iff they aren't connected properly it won't start in gear .One of mine often pulls off and needs crimping further .

Thank you.... you're right... i realise the safety feature of not starting it in gear with kick stand down... it's after the bike is started and I am in first gear ready to go.... if it stalls I'm unable to start it unless it's in neutral... so i think there is an issue with a connection... will find out on Saturday when I take it back to dealer... π

In a stall situation a bike should start in gear with the clutch lever in as your stand is already up. Although if the switch on the stand is playing up or maybe it's working as it should 'cause the stand is sitting lower down with wear and tear. My 2c worth.
