I have an 03 ACE750 with V&H pipes ane 90k on the clock. The bike has always had a bubble since the pipes were fitted about 7k from new but not a miss or a backfire. It was rejetted to suit the pipes and has run faultlessly till the last 2000km or so with the backfire steadily getting worse under decel when the throttle is totally off. It is also missing the odd fire under load. I have leaned out the mix with some minor improvement. After reading the forums I will check the flange gaskets, and have my expert look at the jetting. I have also ordered a new coil kit as the miss might be a separate issue and do fail. I will repost after checking the flanges, the jet service and after fitting the new coil pack.

Check the float level in the carby - may be sitting too high and you're dribbling extra fuel into the combustion chamber which is igniting when you're backing off.

Ok what I have done now is replaced the jets and set it up with a 105 on the rear to compensate for the slight difference in coolingthe rear pot gets. I also overhauled the carbs completely and was surprised to find how dirty they were given a clean out less than 10k ago. I vacume balaced them and replaced the plugs again with original spec denso plugs at the correct gap this time. I also found the fan was not working at all and have now hard wired it through the ignition circuit so it runs whenever the key is on. Even though Honda mechanics suggested it I have found that removing the thermostat completely is not a good idea. I found that doing this allows water to flow faster, however because of the increased flow rate (and therefore lower pressure), the temperature at the top of the radiator is only 2 degrees more than at the bottom of the column. I re-intalled a thermostat fitting minus the center spring and valve this allows for a restriction in the feed pipe and slows the flow down allowing the coolant longer in the radiator so that the top/ bottom temp is now a gap of 12-15degrees. Replacing the coil was a bonus too because while it was functioning almost faultlessly, we did find an intermittent fail which was likely the cause of the occasional miss under load and perhaps contbuting to the backfire. The engine now is much cooler quieter and runs evenly. I also completely drained the fuel tank and was staggered to see so much sludge. I won't be buyingfuel from budget stations or those with old tanks anymore.
