Ok, this thread was well timed as I had been researching some ideas for my own use. I was looking for mounting solutions suitable for my bike and car. This is what I chose and thought I would share. I am also going to paste it in the Bling & Blarney section for the bragging rights
I went with the "RAM" line of products. They are available in Australia from select dealers. I personally went to the actual store in Botany (Mr Mobile) and found an extensive range of components and very helpful staff. You can buy items as a kit (device holder-arm clamp-mounting device) or in components (single parts as you require). As a kit you save some on the costs as apposed to component buying. They are not cheap compared to some similar products on the market, but they are strong, well built and very adaptable. So with-out further adieu here is what I chose.
2 sizes of 3 available arm clamps and a joiner piece. A clamp comes as part of a kit and the joiner as a separate component.
2 types of mounting devices (many more available). I chose the suction cup for my car and the handlebar clamp for the bike (bought 2). Each came as part of a kit, the extra bike mount as a component. Note you also get 2 sizes of U-bolt. I found the smaller perfect, using the spacer and not needing the thread caps.
Mobile phone mount (front and back). Fully adjustable.
iPhone 4 with a Mophie battery pack cover fitted on holder. Top claws are spring loaded. One hand mounting and dis-mounting. No fiddly buttons.
GoPro mount. I went with the nut and bolt supplied, but the GoPro knob and bolt work as well. (Camera case not included)
Motorbike mounts in place. While the set-up looked like the antlers of a juvenile deer, I was more than happy. The other mount you see in shot is for a toll rider tag holder.
Once bar bag went back on, antlers disappeared.
GoPro and iPhone mounted on bike. App open on iPhone is the GoPro app. Works as a full remote and has a preview screen (a little lag, but tolerable for setting camera positions).
Note GoPro turning 45 then 90 degrees showing flexibility of mounting system.
With the mobile phone mounts available, RAM do sell a waterproof one. Its called an Aqua Box. This has a few flaws though. It does keep your phone dry, but if its a smart phone, you have to remove screen protectors and still the touch screen is not 100% guaranteed to function. So the choice is waterproof and limited functionality. Or exposed and full functionality. This situation I could not accept. So with further extreme costs I solved it.
Note the supplier, avoided import costs and taxes by telling the wife to grab them while she was shopping
My iPhone is now waterproof, mounted and fully functional (also its freshness is sealed in, according to the label on the box the bag came in).
All up, I found the mounting system very good. Devices are held securely and can be moved as pleased. I can also swap the mounts to my car as required, therefore cutting down costs of buying a seperate mounting system for car use. Below are some web links, hope you liked my write-up.
