Can anyone tell me how to take apart the ignition switch on a vt750 1998 model so I can clean it. My bike won't start, headlight doesn't come on, from reading the Honda shadow forum (USA), I am pretty sure this is the problem, it says to take it apart and clean it but I can't work out how to take it apart. Thanks

Thanks It's not usually the ignition switch you take apart, on the forum I have seen the fault is in the starter switch on the handlebar. With the switch in it's normal position it allows the headlight to work. When the starter switch is pressed the contacts change over to operate the starter. What happens is that the spring inside the contacts becomes weak and the contacts lose tension. Sometimes if you run extra lights etc, the higher current draw can burn the contacts and then you have no lights, and no starter. You can try cleaning the contacts and retensioning the spring, on the forum some members have replaced the spring with a biro spring and find that works, Let us know how you get on. Rodaco.

If you need a replacement switch any starter switch of the shadow variant will fit, from the 125 to the 1800 and right back to the eighties models.

Hi Lofty, the only wiring diagram I have is for my bike which is an 05 model VT750. I don't know how different it would be to a 98 model. Do you have a multimeter? if so you would need to check and see if you have power from the 10 amp sub fuse at the main fuse box under the RH side cover. power then goes from there via the engine stop/run switch to the starter switch. you could also see if you have power to any of the other fuses and that would at least confirm you are getting power from the ignition switch.

As rodaco said check your fuses and also check the battery and that the connections are clean and tight.

Hi All, it' is the switch, pulled it apart again and jumped it buy using a 10 amp fuse across the terminals which started the bike. I will order one from the local Honda shop, should have it next week. Thanks for the advice and help.

Hello Carl What year and model are you talking about? I've had to disassemble mine (04 Shadow Aero 750) twice now and clean and re-lube the switch. It's not difficult but can be a bit finicky if you don't line up the lug and hole (read - forget to line up the lug and hole) when putting it back together. I'm not sure what you mean by a plate at the back - any chance of a photo of the offending plate?
Regards ... Mark

I recently had to remove my ignition, on a '98 VT750C2 ACE, I removed the screw and outer plastic cover, then drilled the heads off the two shearbolts (originally had a hex head but that shears off when tightened leaving the little dome) then it all comes apart. Well, there are three or four little screws to separate the electric switch from the key barrel. I reassembled it with standard bolts.
