Hi Guys, Hoping someone has some ideas. I own (from new) a Honda VT1100C Shadow 1995 model. Fantastic bike. Never given me any trouble, until now. Has done 129,800 K's.
The problem is this. When travelling around 90-100 km/h (4th or 5th gear) it bogs down (as in loses power) either in trying to accelerate to pass a vehicle or going up hills. Chugs, and if persisted with will backfire VERY loudly! Always have to back off and change down gears going up a hill - forget about trying to pass a vehicle safely!
If I'm on the flat it will hold around 100-110 km/h in 5th, but only if I'm very gentle on the throttle. Trying to accelerate it will still bog down. Although if I can get to around 125 km/h+ it starts to pull ok, but never very strongly.
I don't have any Honda dealers where I live (Batemans Bay), and the mechanic who is working on it hasn't yet been able to figure it the problem. He has cleaned the carbs, checked the needles and diaphragm (all in good condition) and the fuel pump - also fine.
You folks have any idea's? At this point we are just groping in the dark. Which ain't a good thing!
Sure would appreciate any help you could give.
Merry Christmas, and be safe on the road.

My first thought is low compression. Give it a compression test. Could be just leads, plugs or perhaps coil. Also could be carby related.
So work out if it is compression, spark or fuel first.
Pull the plugs and see what they look like.

Well thats a bugger ; Was thinking carbs but you say that has been checked . SO have you checked and cleaned the filter at the petcock itself and also cleaned the air filter or made sure all lines are clear ,not kinked. Some 1100,s i,ve heard the stator breaks down so worth a diagnostic check there and your coil as well. Check also the tank is venting ok . Make sure the cap isnt clogged with a hornets nest .High pressure air will co it . The line in the tank can alos be kinked causing the tank not to vent hence the petrol being drained out as vacum builds up . Hope some of this helps Cheers Ray

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it. I should have mentioned that, prior to taking it to the mechanic, I had replaced the plugs (they looked fine but I replaced them anyway), as did the fuel filter and air filter. The mechanic did check the plugs as a matter of course. Fuel lines are good, fuel flows freely. Coil is something we haven't looked at, nor compression. Will try those. Although I would have thought that if compression was the problem, it would be evident throughout the revs range, not just around the troublesome 90-100 Km/h. Cheers for the thoughts. Any more ideas please let me know.

I'm no mechanic but my first thought was also fuel, when you discounted that I thought electrical, plugs (discounted) so coil? or leads breaking down and shorting
Good luck with it and welcome

Hi Jimbo and welcome to the SRA forum. I own an 1100 aero and sometime ago I was having problems with the bike backfiring loudly and sometimes a bit of trouble accelerating. I took it to a bike mechanic who found a small crack on the exhaust flange where it connected to the engine. He welded the crack and I haven't had any problems since.

Thanks George, I'll pass that on. The exhausts I have fitted are 'after-market'. I replaced the originals with the current ones back in 2000. So they are quite old.

No, the pipes have never been removed. The only thing out of the ordinary was that the bike was stored in my garage for 2014 and most of 2015, whilst I was overseas. Tank was filled with clean fuel and new oil, and battery removed. The bike ran fine most of 2016, until September, when engine started to play up.
