Just out of interest how many of you give your bike the once over ? Every spring I put my bike up on the lift, pull the wheels off check the brakes, tyres and bearings. Then do an oil and filter change, clean air filter (K&N) , check fluids and seals, check globes and tighten all fasteners. The rest of my time goes into washing and polishing

Wash, polish and once over check every couple of months, quick checks most weekends as I ride it every day

I do my own oil and filter change and also change my break pads. Usually when I get petrol I check the tyre pressure as well. But other than polishing, cleaning, well that's about it. I've had my bike for nearly 20 yrs and I think it looks after me more then I look after her, him it!! oh I don't know. Anyway, I have had very few problems, whether that's more luck than anything else, well then lucks been on my side.

I've got my VT going in this week for a full service, all oils etc even though when I bought it the dealer says they were done, theres water damage on the service page so I cant make it out, rather be sure & start fresh.
A mate of mine whos ridden forever once told me he checks his tyres every week as those two skinny bits of rubber are all that keeps you on the road, so I got into the same habit with my old bike, every second tank of gas on my weekly commute I checked the tyre pressure & have done the with the VT.
I some times wish there were easier ways to keep chrome clean but damn they good when they shine

I book mine in for a full service each 10,000 ks. At the last service, the mechanic told me that my back wheel spokes were a lot looser than he would like to see. Now, that's something that I would never check. I check the headlight, tail light, brake light and blinkers every time I take the bike out of the shed. Takes about 30 seconds. I check the tyre pressures about every 2 weeks when they are cold, using my own gauge, which I trust.

G'day Sarah-Jane. There is provision for each spoke to be tightened on the outer end at the wheel itself. Looks like you could use a small shifter or there may be a special tool for the job. I don't know if they are tightened to a specific pressure or not. Is so, I don't know how they check that pressure. I know it sounds stupid, but they may use something like a very small tension wrench on each spoke. I'm sure someone can jump on here and let us know.

Thanks, Spinal. As always, you're a fountain of information. Tightening spokes is something I've never really thought about. It was a very informative video. But, I'll still let the experts do it.

Thanks for the information Spinal. Something I certainly wasn't aware of. Something new to learn about!
