looking for a beginner bike
vlx600 vs vt400
sales said vt400 performs equivalent to a 600cc and can be unrestricted after you gain full licence?
vt400 has more exhaust options to gain healthy lumpy deep note?
vt400 more expensive not easy to find a cheap one..
what are your thoughts

They are out there mate ,but scarce. That in it self should tell you why . Too good to get rid of. Good thoughts you have. Could always by the early models they have replated. Someone from vic has one ,a lot cheaper than the new ones . Cheers Ray.

This is a Honda forum and will get shot for saying this. But the Yamaha xvs650 is a great learners bike, and the LAMS top selling bike atm. They are avail everywhere, and sell pretty quick when you choose to upgrade, I just had one and in 2 years couldn't fault it.
Well that's my 2 cents worth..

I can only speak for the VT400, awesome little bike, rock solid, but you need to learn to ride it accordingly ... because it is a small engine you need to be wise about your gear selections, took me about 6 months to get used to it. Once you get used to it, for inner city riding or commuting you don't need anything bigger than a 400 imho, because it has all the power you need to get around, including for those weekend rides. Oh by the way, the VT400 is not restricted, what you see is what you get. The VT400 is equivalent to the VT750 Aero and any aftermarket parts that fit the same year Aero fit the VT400, at least for 2008/09 If I were you I would do a test ride and see which one you prefer, oh and by the way power will never be enough in six months time regardless what LAMS approved bike you choose.

The real thing to note is this, If you are getting a LAMS bike and then unrestrict it later on. You have to get it restricted again to sell it off. The reason this will be annoying is, because if you don't put it back you will be selling a lower powered 600 against bikes that were released to the market in the open class. You will have to lose money to move the bike.
To be honest, once you unrestrict the bike the power you gain will be nothing compared to a test ride on a open class bike of the same capacity unless you do a fair chunk of mechanical work.
