So I received the following information after emailing Motorcycling Australia here in Melbourne.
Thanks for your email. JIS is a recognised approval label for racing in Australia – DOT is currently not permitted. This information is outlined in the 2015 Manual of Motorcycle Sport under each discipline, for example:
13.10.1 Helmet
13.10.1.1 An approved and correctly fitting full-face helmet (see Appendix B: Helmet Fitting Guide) which must:
a) Carry a label or mark certifying compliance to Australian Standard AS1698 issued by an accredited certifier; or
b) Be approved under FIM Technical Rules.
13.10.2 Approval labels for helmets
13.10.2.1 Helmets must carry one of the following approval labels:
a) Europe ECE 22 - 05 ‘P’ or ‘J’ [Label affixed inside the helmet]
b) USA SNELL M2010, M2015 [Label affixed inside the helmet]
c) Japan JIS T 8133: 2007 [Label affixed inside the helmet]
d) Australia Standards Association of Australia AS1698
13.10.3 International Helmet Standards

The ECE mark consists of a circle surrounding the letter E followed by the distinguishing number of the country which has granted approval, as follows:
