I heard from a mate that some of the Jap bikes (ie shadows) are downtuned as standard. Is there any truth to this? was wondering if there was some more power hiding in my bike lol

Simon may spread more light on this but I understand that the manufacturers detune the bikes at certain revs to pass the Db level test as well as emissions test for all new bikes introduced for ADR testing. Think I saw reference to it in several of Spannermans comments in Motorcycle Trader magazines. Steve

Could be sujective, but when the diaphragm split on the petcock I bypassed it temporarily by joining the pipes, the increase in acceleration was quite noticeable,so its still on it. The inlet /outlets are really narrow.K&N filter, modded pipes, not a great increase in top speed, but definitely improved acceleration

Emissions is the biggie. Most bike will give you a few ponies (and torque) by just changing the air intake & exhaust. Tuning it with the correct jets or using a fuel manager (such as a Power Commander) on FI bikes will get you a few more, better fuel consumption and smoother acceleration.
Eg. VTX1800C stock is 86hp at the rear wheel. Changing out the air intake for a Thunder mfg Tornado, exhaust for V&H Bigshots and adding a Power Commander 3 will result in about 110-115hp at the rear wheel depending upon how good the fuel map is in the PC3.
VT750 may give 5-10hp. When you consider that the stock hp on a vt750 is 38hp at the rear wheel a conservative 5hp increase is still a 13% increase in power.

So given all that mate the best way to go is with the power commander then .Would this be correct. Doing a little bit of searching the other day they recommend the new PC5 commander for 09 onwards. After doing my baffles i reckon the bike definately lugs better so now that is done i suppose the air intake needs doing or just put the commander on . Cheers Ray

Wow
This is all great, but in the end how much is enough, I think that If I had spent all themoney that I could have spent from a wish list I had at the start of my rebirth into motor cycles that I would/could have just as easily bought a VTS1300.
I'm not knocking anyone, its just that I'm uncomfortable now thinking about new better breathing pipes, just to sound louder, mayber get 5hp boost. new jetting, new engine management system, larger intake filter, warpdrive adaptor, pulse ray final drive, vacume bearings to lesson friction, pepetual motion frictionless wheels for smoother landing and hovering. its just too much, I think I'm going to lay down now in the corner and just go to sleep - bibi
Steve ( I think - is it spock, or jim or carter, or ...........

Why mess with a good bike? Just buy a bigger one,it's cheaper

Moe, people may be limited to the size of the bike. My missus is on the lower end of the height scale and is restricted to the smaller bikes such as the XV250 Virago. Some people just like the weight and size but want some a bit more power for overtaking etc. Modding bikes and making it a bit more custom is more like tweaking a bike to be more like your own personality and suit your needs. What a modification is for some is not for others. People ask me what mods they should do for their bikes and my response is "what do you want it to do?"
Should I spend the extra $4000 on accessories and exhaust, fuel manager and intake/warp drive or should I just buy the bigger bike? Well the bigger bike may be too big in terms of size or weight so the smaller bike with some mods may be the better "fit" so to speak.
Honda makes great bikes out of the box, but they don't fit everyone. No manufacturer makes a bike that fits everyone otherwise there wouldn't be a market for accessories and modifications.

Just buy a bigger one,it's cheaper Good point there Moe it probably would be cheaper ,but i think this is where Simon's point he raised then comes into it ,as he says for some it works and others not. The weight is a contributing factor. . Then when or if you get a bigger bike what invariably happens then is you start doing the same thing over again . Cheers Ray

I agree with everyone because you are all right. You can get sucked in to loads of unnecessary mods and upgrades just because they are there. You can also do mods because you need to, like Phil with his riders backrest for bad back. My indicator mirrors and extra driving lights served my fear of not being seen. I think when you first get back into bikes there is a dream list which quickly gets culled unless you have unlimited funds, then you realize that you have to pick and choose either the most necessary or the most desired. Simon is right, i have considered upgrading to the 1800 but it is too high, and the weight would be a problem for my 5' 3'' frame and little legs. so adjusting what i have is the best way to go for me. The only thing i sometimes wish for is a bigger tank which is in direct opposition for my need for pegs that are further back, Bikes are designed for blokes at 5'10'' so if you are much less or much bigger than that you will need to make adjustments to suit your body type. And now i will slink away and be quiet !
