Hi Guys,
I am introducing myself from Thailand... Why, I hear you ask?!!! Well, I just bought myself my first cruising bike - a Shadow 400, (they call 'em choppers here in Thailand) and it's an Asian only spec bike which was slightly modified and sold in Australia to comply with your LAMS regs?
Being British I will be looking for a user manual and workshop manual in English. These items can't be found in Asia. There is no point in looking on European or US forums as they didn't get this model of Shadow...
But... first of all I want to see if any of you can help me correctly identify the model and year?
If any of you have been here to Thailand you may well know that nothing is as it seems...! You never get what you think you are getting! In other words if a Thai wants to sell you something they will fill the story with bullsh!t - which is what the guy did with me... I think?
So, if I were to post a picture of the bike could any of you try and identify it? Are there any specific parts/areas that will help you identify it?
Thanks guys... Looking forward to getting this ID sorted!
Regards EnEs63

Welcome to the God mate . Hope we can sort your problem out . Ok a 400 you say . Great bike . Need to know the year as they did make the earlier models different shape . Best way to identify that is by the the read fender rails .Earlier models had them curved Like an ACE model . Recent years they were made with straight rails . Aero is the model for that . If you were to contact Simon from Badpennycustoms.con .au and give him your indentificatin numbers he will be able to give you a run down on the bike. So what year is stamped on your Vin plate . This should be on the right side of the frame under the tank . Can you post a pic that would help. If it's a later model with straight rails on rear fender you order parts for a 750. They are identical. Only thing different is the pistons and bore in the motor . Hope this helps . Try posting a pic mate

Welcome from around the corner, just down the road, across the water! Lol, I'm in Australia. I do have user manual in PDF form. Its about 155MB and might be able to email I think. I have a 2012 VT400 and use the VT750c Aero manual if that helps. Enjoy the ride, its a great bike to have! Cheers LooseWheel

Hi Guys,
Hey thanks for all your responses... Great!
I seem to be unable to post a picture right now? I don't get the "add attachment" button that the help section talks about? Maybe 'cause I'm a newbie? I am currently using an iPad... Could that also be the problem?
Ok, so what do I know so far... The bike doesn't have the straight rails on the rear fender. They are curved. From what I can see from the internet this bike could be an ACE? If it's a 400 it could be a VT400? It's chain drive too so that could make it a VT400c Ace?
Ok, the frame number... Being an Asian spec bike it doesn't have a 17 digit VIN number, only a 12 digit frame number. Would this help?
As I said in my OP, you never get what you are told you are getting here in Thailand! The dealers paperwork shows my bike as a 2007. A Honda Shadow 400 classic. I now doubt this is 2007? For a start - the fuel filler cap is central on my bike which indicates it is an earlier model. Isn't the 2007 a shaft drive? It does have HISS though...
As soon as I can find out how to post some pictures I will do just that... Watch this space...

Hi George,
Thank you. I have already been here. The VT400 manual they have is only for the 2008 model - shaft drive, fuel injected etc... To late for mine...
I have been doing quite a bit of reaearch this end into my bikes age and model. The model has been fairly easy... It looks like a limited edition VT400c Ace made between 2000 and 2003. The limited edition was released in 2002. When I can post pictures I will get you guys to see if you agree.
The Thai's are pretty simple people really and I am starting to think the dealer said it was an 07 simply because it 'didnt look very old'! In fact, having done quite a bit of work on it myself it almost looks brand new now... I guess that means I could sell it as a 2014 model!!! .?? Lol...
The bike is definitely a 'bitsa'. Made from parts of other bikes. This practice is very common here and probably applies to 90% of big bikes on the road. The 11 digit frame number shows it is pre 17-digit VIN numbers so must be 1996 or older? The rear wheel is 08, the front wheel is 06, the side battery box panels are 05 & 06, front brake pipe 06... So on and so on. My sticking point, also the most important point, (for me), is the engine/gearbox age... The engine model is a NC25E which seems to have come from a Honda Steed? The Shadow and Steed are technically almost identical so no big issues with that. According to what I have found on the internet the last digit of the engine serial number denoted the year. That makes the engine an 06?
This is what I need to confirm now.
So, getting there!
Once the age and model is confirmed I can concentrate on getting the service manual and get on with maintaining it... Valve gaps need doing by the sounds of it and a few cogs in the box are a bit noisey... All good fun!
BTW, do you know why I cant post pictures yet? Is it because I am a newbie? I am not seeing the "add attachment" button in the reply window?...

Hello again, Ok, here are some pictures at last (thanks to spinal for the tip!). The first two images are straight forward enough. The shot of the tank mounted instruments might give a further clue as to it's age - especially with regards to the centrally mounted fuel filler cap. The last image is of the tank logo. It's not the standard 'Shadow' logo...? This is something I can find very little info on so far... Any help in identifying it's age so I can get some manuals, will be great. Regards EnEs63

Hi Ray,
Thanks for this... The links were great. I will get in touch with Simon with the frame and engine numbers. If he can ID them I might well be on my way to finding some service manuals...
Will keep you posted.

Hi EnEs63
I think it might be a 2003 limited edition model, I saw a black 750 on eBay today with the same tank arrangment

Yea, I'm getting to that stage too...? MS ( www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/honda/honda_shadow_%20400_04.htm ), shows it as 2002 model though! This is exactly the same as my bike, albeit the colour scheme is different. Still, 2002/2003 - what the hell. As long as I can find a rough year then I will try and find the manuals... Thanks Spanner107..
