Hi members have a question to pose those of the knowledgeable persuasion. ;D Got a phone call from a Shadow rider in Darwin ,nice bloke chatted for 20minutes. Anyhow he would like to know if there is a possibility of putting the 750 diff into the 400 that he owns. Wants more top end . I thought it would interchange but not sure on the specs . Iff the 750 diff has different rear end ratio or are they just a solid drive and the gearbox does the job. Honda up there in the top end could not or would not help the young man out (40) ;D He may join us on the site as i told him to do . SIMON i gave him your web address and ph. number. Cheers Ray

Hmmm, I know that you change the final drive out on the VTX1300 to 1800 to lower the revs on the 1800 (and gives more punch to the 1300).
I'll have to have a bo-peep into it and see what the final ratios are.

Just spoke to Matt in Darwin and here's the drum that I gave him.
The gear set in the final drive is the same in the VT400, VT750 & VT1100. So there is no benefit to changing gear sets or final drives. The only way to lower your rpms is with the gearbox.
Cheers
Simon.

Cheers Simon. Thanks Simon i knew you would do us proud. Matt should be glad and not so glad to hear that. Just to throw confusion amongst this there is no chance then one cant put a 1300 assembly in the back. I suppose the wheel diameter and size would be the issue. Do remember a dude over seas that did change the back end with. well i cant remember so i'll go back and have a look. When it's all done and dusted i suppose it would be just easier to get the bigger bike hey. Same as looking for better HP and the like, dunno. Cheers Ray

where there is a will there is a way...
but sometimes .... only sometimes mind... its easier to just go the easy route.. this may be one of those times..
wheel diamiter jumps to mind amongst other things.. would have to ask smarter people than me about over working the engine and clutch ect.. when goin more top end.., where i have set mine for less top end, more off the mark, i know ive lost mileage.. but a small sacrifice for the desired result.
its a good idea to know what you want to FINISH with when seting out to modify a car or bike.
so.. where there is a will there is a way.. i wonder if your local diff shop would give a solution? like regearing standard diff..?

Sounds like a lot of figureing out (not to mention money), couldn't you just get higher profile tyres? Wouldn't that have the same effect?

Same final drive, just laced on a wider rim to the stock Aero hub. Cool.
