....................& use your gears to slow down (I'm surprised no one has mentioned that till now)................... Sorry mate, not wanting to be critical but if you read my previous post and that of a couple of others, you might find that we say exactly that. So no need to be surprised, we did say to use gears PPS: The best road skills/craft course I ever did was with Sixty Degrees Motorcycles (in Victoria www.sixtydegrees.com.au/browse/browse.asp?DeptID=107&CatID=1109), who taught me how to use the right lines, gears and speeds for every turn, and not have to use brakes at all on twisties. They took me on a course for several hours through several hills/mountains, and didn't apply the brakes at all during those runs, while being even safer. The principal was you learn't more about your bike, safe entrance/exit speeds, and proper control of your vehicle. At the same time, those speeds allowed suffcient time and distance to react accordingly if the need arose to straighten up the bike and applying emergency braking procedures. Sounds like a great course, Wolfy. Before getting back on a bike just over a year ago (and BTW I first came back on a scooter before I moved to the cruiser 3 months later) I reckon I learnt how to take fast corners on a Formula One game on my playstation. Go too hot and you overshoot, use your brakes too late while turning and you spin. I did learn the best entry, apex and exit to "straighten" a corner for a faster cornering speed. So translating this to bikes, gear down to take a bend with positive accelerator and FFS stay off the brakes! But as you state, never ride faster than you can see around the bend. But we're digressing from Anna's original post. I reckon everyone should take brush up lessons periodically to highlight any bad habits that have crept in.

Well I've been thinking bout why I dropped my baby yesterday and I think it's related to the stuff in this thread, so I read back through it all. ... it's all part of the learning experience isnt it, and I guess if it makes internal angst and makes me think about it more then I'm just gonna look at it properly so I can learn from it. So my thoughts are .... I stopped suddenly, wasnt going fast had seriously just put my feet up, but I hit the front brake hard and unexpectedly. I've practiced my E-stops and felt pretty good at them, can stop pretty quick when I'm doing 30k's or so, but ... I knew I was gonna stop. I had the plan in my head so it didnt include all those things that the unexpected does .. like a huge hit of adrenaline. So when I stopped suddenly I wasnt prepared for it and I lost balance and the baby just kinda slid to the ground with me desperatly trying stop it at first then trying to make the fall as gentle as possible. Two lessons learnt, I need more practice with E-stops, I know it's not gonna be the same as an unexpected stop but with more practice, when I do need to do it in real life maybe automatic skills will kick in if I've done it a gazillion times before. The second lesson, dont hold the bike after the point of no return, I dont think I made it any different for the bike, but my back and right shoulder are feeling it today I've booked in for my P's for next month. I've gone with the training in Bathurst cause I desperately want the training. I'm hiring one of their bikes tho I'd like to do it on my bike, but it's bout a 2.5 hour drive from here and starts at 8am. If I was to take the bike would take longer to get there cause I do ride slower atm. And I'm hoping the nice steady bikes they have there will be a breeze to do a u-turn on (and if i do drop it it's not my baby gettig hurt ). OH and kudos for me, I did a u-turn yesterday, not the tight ones that I have to do for the test but hey I did it perfectly, even better than cray (dont tell him I said that )
