Okay riders, I shadow a number of learners and no, I'm not an instructor. One of the issues that I've come across whilst taking them out into the hills is shown in the photograph below. The gravel is always on left hand sweepers where the cars get into the gravel on the left and drag debris into the middle of the road. Often there are two lines of gravel, one as shown and another in the middle near the white lines. When we've come across this scenario, I've told my inexperienced rider to take the right side of the gravel. My reasoning being:- 1. Inexperienced riders tend to under steer and are likely to drift into the gravel line as they corner causing them to low side 2. They should already be approaching the bend from near the centre line so they can apex the bend, and so it is easier for them to stay on that right side line and not apex the bend, staying on safe tarmac 3. If the take the right side they may have only the middle line of gravel to contend with (if there is any) keeping the bike more upright than they would normally when cornering. Your opinions (for or against) would be appreciated.

Good tip there, Scrap, especially with the ball bearing type gravel we have here in WA.
The other thing I'd like to add is that if you do hit gravel and have a sudden tyre slip, don't panic! Stay nice and relaxed while going through a bit of a slide but try to maintain a consistent balance avoiding any over corrections. In most cases it will only be a momentary slip. But if you try to slow down or, god forbid, hit your brakes, you'll be saying a close hello to the tarmac.

Great tip. I'm still learning how to pick my lines and I know i furber it up a lot of the time, but I'd certainly look out for something like that. Specially as at the moment there's a lot of rubbish on the road from all the storms we've had lately.
Thanks Scrap

I had a bit of a slip through a corner on a wet road only last Sat, glad to say I didn't panic, or hit the brakes. Intherough, you're right, don't panic & ride it through
