Here in Perth we've had 12 biker fatalities so far this year with five of those since 29/2. The most recent was only 1am last night on our freeway where a 34yo died after crashing with a 4wd. However most of the fatalities were single vehicle accidents. The reports are saying that most of the accidents were the rider's fault. Inattention, speed, alcohol, inexperience were some of the factors. So fellow riders, please take it easy out there. Personally, I know that I have a Dark Side that likes to twist the throttle, scrape the pegs on high speed bends and ride hard. These recent accidents have been a wake up call for me to go slower. Shit, I'm even riding within the speed limits (WG this doesn't imply that I normally break the law and travel above the designated speed limits ) We all know the risks we take and how vulnerable we are. Definitely ride within your capabilities, wear full protective clothing and be fully aware of you and your surroundings. Have fun riding but please take it easy out there, ok!

I am "over" going to funerals for fellow riders. Ms Steerable (Christie) was buried yesterday .... such a loss. That's two riders I knew that have perished this year ...... its had an impact ... I'm riding even more defensively than usual.

Thanks...Intherough for starting this thread and Scrap for your additional comments, using the motorcycle death toll here in Perth for this year so far, if we lost that many men in Afghanistan in the period there would be a overwhelming outcry to bring the boys home. It's a personal choice for us all on the type of helmet and safety gear we choose, but erring on the side of caution before the accident rather than regret our choice after makes sense to me. Once we have made those decisions then its a matter of hoping for the best and enjoying the ride. For the ride, and everything that goes with it, for us mad motorcyclists, seems to outweigh the down side of this high risk activity. Greyshadow
