Well Tintin you've opened a can of worms here. I've just been in a similar position that you are, having just graduated the mandatory 1 year limited capacity debacle. I however started on the Yamaha xvs650 which was a great bike and could run all day with the Queensland members but of course I looked to upgrade. I was looking at bikes for 6 months before I decided on 3 bikes to test out. Of which I didn't purchase. I ended up going with the new Fury - 1300cc. Stats I'm 6,2 and on a wet day I'd be lucky to tip the scales at 75kg provided my boots were full of water at the time of measurement.
But here lies the conundrum, its a fantastic bike but then I wonder should I have gotten something bigger or smaller, then I hop on the bike and realize its perfect for my needs.
Yes its bulky and requires a 5 point turn in a shopping centre to do a u-turn however I don't use it for that.. On the open road it gives me power when I want it, holds my line in the lane when a truck goes past and can carry me and my 9 year old son comfortably.
So basically what I'm saying is this, Look at your needs now and think of a bike that will suit, but before you even go for a ride think of 5-10years down the track. Will you need power for a passenger? will you require a towball for a trailer? Will you be mainly commuting or weekend trips?
But either way you go, test ride everything, then ride it some more. But look to see if there's a new model coming out soon, if there is you could score a newer version or the current model cheap on a runout sale..
That's my 5c

Sed, I'd say that's more like 20c ... Or is it really good value for your money ;D I do agree with you in a sense tho I'll wait a bit longer til I upgrade. Don't tell cray I said that, he thinks I'm keeping the 400 foreva

I'm not thinking of upgrading yet ... I guess what I meant was that I know I wont be satisfied with my baby bike for ever and will want to upgrade sometime ... not for a long time yet I dont think, I still love the 400 too much.
I just agreed with how Sed put it, makes sense and it's pretty much what I did to choose the Shadow, but when it's the right bike you just know it every time you get on it.
Having said that I may just see a Harley next year that I just have to have ....hahahahahha ;D

Yep, not being able to go 100km on a tank... What's the point?

Made for parking outside the pub, and scaring small children with the straight pipes?
