So here's something that has been bugging me for years. Here we are in 2012, we can sent robots to Mars, we can build The Hadron Collider to study particle physics, we talk in real time to anyone anywhere on the planet. But for some reason when we pull into a service station and try to fill up, if the attendant happens to be restocking the shelves or doing some other job that keeps him away from the register, we have to wait until he returns to his spot and presses a button that allows fuel to flow to our pump. I just don't get it. Presumably it's to wait until the previous customer has paid for their fuel and then they can re-initialise the bowser. Surely we have the technology to store the info of the previous sale in the computer and allow for the pump to be used again after it has been idle for a set period of time. Is it just me or do other people find this situation annoying and out dated.

i hear you brother. not sure on the reasoning - its definitely not to ensure the last payment, i have a local station thats busy as and often i am standing in line bhid the last guy to fill before he's paid. I can only presume its some sort of rediculous safety rubbish, like they're supposed to check there's no naked flames ans such before allowing the pump to start. thats just a guess. either way its annoying as shit, and could be stopped because i know of a country 24hr unmanned servo.

It's also because of petrol drive-offs, aka thefts. It's to ensure the attendant is aware that a new customer has accessed the pump, and that the staff have 'acknowledged' it. If there were only an audible alarm inside, there's no guarantee the staff know someone is getting fuel, especially if they're on the crapper. When they hit the button, it's assumed they look at the car/driver, and if there is then a drive-off, they can give a witness statement coupled with the CCTV.

Only happened to me yesterday on the way to the ride . Took at least 2 minutes before the pump was activated.

Before 7-11 took over the Mobile servo's you could pull into a Mobil servo and pay at the pump by card then fill up, no need to remove your helmet and you couldn't do a drive off, so what do 7-11 do they remove the option because they want you to have to walk into the store in hope you by more crap.

As we are whinging about petrol stations, I find it strange that I get asked to remove my helmet before I refuel, but in the winter I wear a silk balaclava under the helmet and nobody has ever asked me to remove that... ??
and Shane ... I sure as Sh*t miss those Mobil pay at the pumps petrol stations.
