Shift Peg Modification.
This modification allows you to mount an after market shift peg on your metric cruiser replacing the stock welded on shift peg. These instructions are generic and should be used in combination with your bike specific service manual to ensure correct removal and reassembly of parts and torque values for bolts.
As always, any modification to your motorcycle is undertaken at the owner’s discretion. The responsibility for any modification remains with the owner. Bad Penny Customs does not accept any liability for any issue arising from this modification. By using this instruction and carrying out this modification, or any version of it, you are agreeing to release Bad Penny Customs, it’s owners, employees or associates from any form of legal responsibility. No form of warranty is given or implied.
This modification can be done with shifter arm still attached to the bike but we do recommend you remove it before undertaking this modification. This will allow greater control and you will be less likely to damage parts.
You will need
- Shifter Peg of your choice (to fit American or Harley Davdison motorycycles)
- ¼” drill bit (for metal)
- 5/16” x 24 tap (to make the thread)
- Allen keys
- Hacksaw
- Flat file
- Cutting oil.
- Loctite (or other thread lock).
Instructions
1) Remove the shifter peg assemlby from the bike according to your bike’s service manual.
2) Place the arm in a vice ensuring that you wrap the arm in some material first to prevent damage to the arm’s finish.
3) Using the hacksaw (or Dremel with cutting attachment) cut off the shifter peg. Ensure you only cut the peg and not into the arm. Remember, you can take metal off but you can't put it back on.
4) Using the file (or grinding stone on the dremel) flatten any protruding bits of metal. Try and make it level with the rest of the shifter arm.
5) Measure the width of the shifter arm and then mark the centre of the arm where the hole for the shifter arm will go.
6) Using a 1/16” drill bit, drill a small pilot hole to ensure you get the centre of the arm.
7) Using the ¼” drill bit enlargen the hole.
8) Tap thread using a 5/16” x 24 tap. Ensure you use ample cutting oil.
9) Wipe off excess oil and debris (ensure you don’t scratch the arm’s finish).
10) Attach new shifter peg and bolt (place a small amount of Loctite on the bolt).
11) Re-attach shifter arm.
