So I was riding home from my sisters place yesterday, and as I left, I heard a 'scraping' type of sound as I took of a low speed It's not a loud sound, and my husband (who rides my bike frequently) has never noticed it. I haven't heard it if he's been coming to a stop at home, only when I've been on it. I have noticed this sound on different occations, usually if I am coming to a stop and the bike is slowing down/rolling and have thought it's been the drive shaft. Im not sure if these are supposed to be completely silent, or have a bit of a rotating sound??? The best way I can describe it is like if your tyre is out of alignment and scrapes along the brake or guard. It makes that sound each revolution. I dont notice it at high speeds, only slowing down, or rolling. It seemed rather noticeable yesterday, and the only thing different was that I was carrying about 4kg in a back pack. I plan on taking to the shop next week to get them to look at it. But just wanted to find out if you guys have heard a similar sound, or your thoughts on what it could be Thanks Maisy

Maisey,
check under the valance (guard) you may have picked up a stick that is wedged up under the guard and when stopping the weight redistribution is causing the scrape, if thats not hit the gus at Pro honda in Ipswich

Sounds like it could be a wheel bearing. If it is you'll want to replace it asap. Best way to check is to get the wheel off the ground and turn it and wiggle it side to side, back and forth. If there is any movement or grinding sounds then your bearings need replacing.

Thanks for the info guys. Checked it over for branches, none found. Hope its not bearings my bike is only 2500km old. If it is I'm assuming it would be covered under warranty. On closer inspection with no helmet on, engine off and rolling it forwards and backwards, its definitely coming from the front wheel and not back as I suspected It seems like it could actually be the brakes rubbing??? So is it possible that the brakes need adjusting to widen the gap (excuse my naivety with terminology, Im a much better rider than I am mechanic ) Also, if that's the case, would it be something that is covered under warranty? Thanks heaps guys, its nice to come here and get some genuine advise from folks who want to help and not ridicule the female riders Maisy

Good, gotta save the forests If its coming from the front pads it could be you have picked up a bit of road gravel, Is it leaving any marks on your disc If it is I know what I would do but I'm not game to post it as all the classy mechanics out there would castrate me. If it is a small pebble or such and its been there for a day or two it has most likely imbeded itself into the disc pad and you should go to a dealer and ask them to separate /open the calipers and have a looksee. They may be able to scrape the offending piece out or simply replace the pads. unfortunately if what I suggested is the problem its not under warrenty but also it is not expensive to fix. OK thats my answer over to you Simon. By the way Simon the grips fitted on just great took 40 mins though, the next set for Pams bike will take less. Steve

If it's coming from the front wheel then it will either be the front bearings or the front pads. Pads aren't that expensive or hard to replace. You could change themself if you have some basic tools. Use a car jack and some wood under the front of the engine. Make sure someone holds the bike. Jack the the bike up untill the front wheel is clear of the ground. spin the wheel and see if you hear any noise. Move wheel side to side and see if there is any movement in the wheel (without the rest of the bike moving). If there is then it's the bearings. Here is some helpful info. hondatech.info/downloads/Moto/VT/

Interesting one there Kingy hadn't figured on that . ,When i gave mine a wash today i had a slight scrapping noise i hadn't heard before but picked it as a bit of crud in the pads . Might go back for another deco on sunday and investigate aa bit further. Cheers Ray
