Spent a long afternoon parked and making friends on the freeway, Mittagong side of the Bargo/ Balmoral fire. Finally drove through the fire in the midst of a RFS truck convoy at 9pm. Had just spent the day visiting my mum in the Southern Highlands. My dad also had a long day. He was in Sydney and got caught on the Picton side of the same fires. He ended up getting through on the old highway.
For anyone else in the thick of it. Stay calm, listen to instructions and stay safe. One thing I noticed yesterday was the amount of idiots out there. Traffic not moving and morons using breakdown lanes to move forward. Like what are they thinking. They get a few hundred meters then get stopped like everyone else. Then the emergency crews come through and because of the morons, can't get past.
Also how many people got out of their cars to wander about in the fading light with no Hi-Vis gear. I know its not something that most happen to have, but seriously wandering about on a road at dusk, dressed in black. Might be just me, being a security officer for 25+ years, but talk about stupid. For me it's something I always have on my bike and in the car. So hi-vis vest went on straight away, and if I did get out of the car, moved to the front of my vehicle for a safe spot, not in the breakdown lanes where the fire crews are traveling. Sorry about the rant- had to say something to someone.
My thoughts go to all involved in the effort to control the fires. When I passed the fire and saw the damage and size of the fire still burning (a small fire btw compared to others). You relise just how brave these guys and girls are. 4-6 crew members, a truck and a shitload of guts. Well done all involved.

Agreed there BDR and Dazza.. To everyone on the coast, I hope you all are safe and not in danger areas. My thoughts are with all the people who have been affected by these tragic events.
