Ok, so my next project was to have some 12volt power sockets available. I needed a way to keep my GoPro and iPhone charged while on rides. After a little research I decided this was what suited me best. With this set-up, the look is very clean when not in use. I remove the cables and pop the weather covers in place.
I purchased a couple of marine type sockets from my local "Jaycar". I then went to my bike mechanic and had him fit them. He wired them so they are not live unless my ignition is on, so as to not flatten battery if I forget to disconnect. Costs were minimised for the fit, due to me having the bike serviced at the same time. I left placement to mechanic. My only requirement was to fit into the plastic frame covers, just forward of the tank.
The end result was more than pleasing. I now have 2x 12 volt outlets available, one either side of the bike. Due to available room under the covers, they are mounted slightly different.
I use the right side as my primary source. I purchased a double port plug from JB Hifi. Some right angle, coiled USB cables were obtained from Ebay. Once fitted the look is clean, and the cables stretch and retract as necessary while riding. This set-up powers my GoPro (Back pac battery and skeleton housing fitted) and my iPhone 5s (Mophie Juice pack Air fitted). I could not locate a suitable right angle micro USB cable (for the iPhone case), so I purchased a right angle/ coiled USB extension and a small right angle micro USB cable. This suits me fine as I can then change to whatever connection I might need in the future. Below are some pics showing the primary side.
My deices are mounted on my handlebars as seen here hondashadowriders.proboards.com/thread/2925/bdrs-device-mounting-solution.
Cables used.
Right side supply (cover closed).
Right side close-up (cover closed).
Right side (cover open).
Right side with plug fitted.
GoPro uses 2.1a, iPhone uses 1a.
Right side- cables fitted.
The left side is my secondary supply. Due to its location you have to disconnect before parking and turning the steering to full lock. When at full lock the forks can hit and possibly damage the cable. Not an issue though while riding. As such I use this as required, like when when Casper or Zombie have flat phone batteries (both have already hinted that I am a mobile charge point, now all I have to do is fit a meter so I know what to bill them .
I use a single plug and another right angle/ coiled cable. Any device I am charging using this source, I place into my handlebar mounted tool bag.
