I want a little more kick from the bike, where should I start?
just a note, I don't want to bore the engine.

Hey Moretime, I have the 400 but was lucky enough to pick mine up with V&H cruiser pipes which make a difference I think as I have got away quickly at the lights side by side ( no i wasn't racing because thats not allowed ) with a stock vt400 and easily got out in front of him you can also desnorkel them and swap the air filter for a K&N which is said to help. I have not done that as I will be selling soon. That's about the limit of it and as you will most likely have it till your off restrictions I would not put a lot of dollars into the 400, although if your next bike is going to be the vt750 the exhaust and filter will fit them as well. Thanks az, Im not on any restrictions. I bought it because it was clean and cheap. I may have to look into pipes, was trying to keep it on the quite side as I normally get home late, but if it helps with that little kick then ha ha ha I better.

Mate, I had a '94 vt600 and drilled out the pipes (took the resinators out). It sounded better without being too loud and produced better performance. Fuel consumption remained the same. Beerfrog

There's quite a lot of debate as to whether the K&N air filters actually improve performance too. I've been reading up on it, as you can guess why. . There is supposedly a guy on here (MRC?) with a fast VT400. Maybe he'll chime in here.

This is the response I got from MRC on another thread about the same subject. There's a list of stuff to do at the bottom. I plan on doing all of these eventually.....and some I've already started, but my bike (after today) is still running in at 502klms. So I'm being gentle too. Kevin ........... have riden mine thousands of k's around queensland and to new south wales and Victoria ... fully loaded with me I would be carry around 105 kgs in weight... follow some simple rules and you will be happy with.... it will cruise at 120k easy along the highway (mine 135 if I need to overtake but that's max for me cause I don't want to hurt her and I try really hard to keep to the speed limit), remember to use your gears with the smaller bikes, this is why a lot of people complain with the smaller cc (cause they don't use their gears) snap a gear back before hitting the hill, half way up snap another if ya need to and it will cruise over at 90 to 100k.... They are a remarkable bike and will do what ever you want... Overtaking is an art and I do what you are doing, you won't get around if your doing 100 or 110 ... plan it, drop back and hit it.... These bikes also are the best when it comes to counter steering, they love it and you will to.. de-baffle exhaust (you will love the sound) Caltex vortex 95 fuel Penrite 15w 40 oil K&N air filter de snorkel your filter with your height ( I am 5 foot nothing lol ) chuck some highway bars on and some highway pegs, then kick back relax and just bloody show off, cause your riding one of the best and most reliable bikes on the road....

I'm hesitant to just pull out the baffles. It would shit me if I got defected and had no back up pipes. The filter I have looked into aswell. Just getting one and stop dicking around with choices is my problem, they don't seem to difficult to install. (Attached picture) i have be mirrors coming and currently contemplating riser. Also looking for some highway pegs. Do you have a crash bar? Attachments:

Speaking of pipes. It seems that every man and his dog has loud pipes on their bikes. (I got pulled aside by a guy at Fernvale yesterday by a guy who asked me what type of bike I rode. When I told him it was a Honda Shadow he said "yeah I thought it was either a Honda or a Triumph as it's so quiet" . But I'm reading everywhere that for RWC and the police are cracking down because of the noise? So, still being on LAMS myself I probably won't touch the pipes just yet. But if the baffles fall out???

I used to worry about the noise mine makes when I first got it and used to freak when i ended up next to transport or cops but found as long as I am not getting up it through the gears it's not to bad and have never had a side ways glance from the constabulary. Cheers Azza

I like a bike to sing as much as the next man but when playing with exhaust and baffles the most important thing to remember is back pressure. The bike needs it and when I chopped my exhaust i also chopped my baffles and put them back in I got a bit better sound without lossing to much back pressue and it worked for me but my bike is a 2001 750 not injected

Good point "buccapete" regarding exhaust system. It is possible to reduce performance and economy through these types of modifications. Whenever modifying exhaust or intake systems it is wise to keep in mind your air/fuel ratio.
Suggest before any modifications are made give the bike a good service, including valve adjustment. A compression test may be in order also.
