ok I had an experience on my vt750s , on way back from Kenilworth, after I fueled up, my bike started missing badly about 20k out, then shut down, the iss light came on, the engine light came on the whole bike shut down . pulled over pushed the button away I went. same thing another 40 odd ks and going through some twisties , happened countless times, had to get home by a certain time so rode carefully home. no sign of overheating, thought were bad fuel, wasn't until a few days later, I ventured into the shed, took the seat off and had a look at the battery, I had replaced the battery about 6 weeks ago. there it was the negative lead was very loose on the terminal, almost off. I tightened it down properly, haven't had any probs since.
still might get download from shop , but if you have an efi bike that shuts itself off, either bad fuel, or head to a bad battery conection, if you see a temp light or oil light come on, id be looking at a ute to get you home,

Thanks Happy. Certainly worth a look for sure. Don't know about the Ute part mate. Sounds horrible but a must at times I suppose.

I've been reading a lot of Motorcycle travel stories lately, and the most consistent fault with bikes on the road is loose battery terminals. As you say, causes all sorts of weird problems. Certainly would pay to keep an eye on them. Rodaco

Make sure the nut behind the handlebars is tight as well

I had a similar experience - bike coughed and spluttered and carried on - didn't stop though. I got to a local coffee shop and when I went to leave I had a flat battery, I took the headlight fuse out and push started it - and rode well all the way home. Next day I had the battery fully charged and load tested - it failed so $108 for a new battery and it hasn't missed a beat since. So it doesn't need to be a loose terminal - it could be old age.

Yes mate .a good point that to check your battery as well. Rules out any further probs for sure . Any one else had a similar problem.

Just so it is clear to everyone, remove the headlight fuse so the headlight when draw power from the battery.
