So either no one's talking or admitting it but so far I can only see 2 people have done a valve adjustment on their bike. Are most of you content do let the dealer do it? Or do many of you have a favorite local mechanic who does your work? Valve adj is fairly straight forward but there's usually an disassembly or procedure snag somewhere so would like to have a few people's names that have done it in case I run into a snag that first time. Fortunately the run-through here on the forum is safely copied and will be my main reference unless I get a manual, but even then they often leave out the "snags" that we end up finding and having to work through. Plus this will be the 400 not the 750 in the reference so who knows if that will bring up a different snag? Anyway just trying to cover as many bases as possible. I tried to contact Pete in Penguin, Tasmania but no answer. Anyone know if he's still around? He'd be my go to guy since we'll be in Taz for the first check/adj and if all goes well won't need another one the rest of the trip. Moe is in W.A. so he'll be a last resort, telephone only.

I done the tappets on my 750 Shadow after reading how too, and watched a video, after you strip the seat, tank, hang speedo on a towel over h/bar.Too get the chrome plastic covers off the top of the tappet covers I cut the nose back about half on a allen key it make the job a lot easer on the front one .I took the ties off the elec, plumming ect, gives more room too remove tappet covers ,on the top of the covers there is an attachment for the pair valve, remove the one on the back cover nothing falls out, makes the job easer. The front cover comes off with it on.If you have the bike in an upright position until it cools down over night no oil comes out of any where. You will need a socket too turn the engine over counter clock wise too adjust the tappets.I left the spark plugs in until i had the tappet covers off to stop the chance of any thing falling in their holes. If sitting on the bike the front cover comes off too the left, the rear cover too the right.Intake 0.15/0.006 Exaust 0.20/0.008
