Here I lie bed after having my finger and hand cut open to clean out some very bad infection which developed in 24 hours despite being on antibiotics A gelco stuck in the vein in the back of my hand pumping iv antibiotics into me the other hand is in a sling like an obscure stop sign, I'm the youngest on the room, the closest to me being 70 (I know that's not old, buy he is) and the other 2, well I'm not sure but I think its safe to say they have passed away and haven't been told Brenda is in a freecamp 12 km out of town and can't hook up or drive with the van on Now the good points A caravan forum member who had helped is out in 2013 when we broke down near Balledonia, had come to the rescue again, he has a daughter and sil her in Kal standing by to help of we need them I will hopefully get my finger out (of hospital) ASAP when I've had all the antibiotics most Most of the nurses and even my surgeon are really good looking Hopefully we'll be on our way home again in a few days

I feel much better thanks but the hand is still RSed Doc recons I need antibiotics vids IV for at least another 2 days, maybe another 2 after that THEN HE SAYS we would really like you to stay close for at least 1 our 2 weeks as we want to make sure the infection does not come back when you are on oral antibiotics, you won't be able to drive for that long anyway and it will be 6 to 8 weeks before you have full user of your hand anyway
FAR KING WHAT?
we have to spend 2 weeks here at $39 a night, ooooh my aching wallet
All I did was make a camp fire, I was breaking some twigs and one pierced my skin by about 5mm, I'd happened a few times before Washed the wound, look in it, no foreign matter, clean it, disinfect out, put a band aid on it, make s cup of HTFU and get back to the job at hand

The job at hand, most if not all of us have done it before right
FFW 9 hours, it 2am, I wake up shivering feeling like crap and I have the flu, get up to go to the toilet turn the light on and my aching finger is 1/2 the size of a chilly pepper and almost as red, 3 minutes later I manage to get my 60 th birthday ring off to Save it from the ring cutter, and get back to bed to continue shivering for another 3 hours At 8.30 I'm at the hospital getting some antibiotics and told that if it gets worse to come back, which is what I did at 7pm as by then the whole hand was swollen and the red was working it's way up the arm. I was admitted and looked at by a rather good looking surgeon and told she would have to get her boss to look at it in the morning and would probably operate to remove the infection meanwhile IV antibiotics By the next morning my hand was swollen to the wrist and the redness had gone to the armpit Apparently the timber I broke and skewered myself with was sandalwood and has been known to take a hand in a week. I SHOULD get all movement back including my index finger which I cannot bend at the moment (the reason I can't drive) Had we left that day, by the time I realised I was in trouble it would have been to late to turn back and I would have lost the hand to necrosis possibly more
So people, sandalwood is a nasty timber, apparently they are other times out there like it SO when you are breaking twigs, even when you are collecting firewood ALWAYS USE GLOVES, I will from now on

Man that's wild I would never thought such a thing and i have worked with timber most of my life and as you say you get a splinter pull it out with teeth or pliers and keep going. Treated timbers splinters tend to get a bit red and sore but nothing like you got. Azza

Well, that's a pretty scary story. Yes, I too, like most people have had splinters and think nothing of it. I guess that as we get older our bodies can't handle things as good! Wishing you a speedy recovery Frank.
