My beloved 2010 VT400 Betty has had a gremlin in her system for the last couple of years where, for no apparent reason, will occassionally not start at all...come back a few hours or days later, starts no problem. After 5months, off-and-on, in different mechanics hands...ie it’s spent 5months actually off the road, the latest theory is the problem lies with the Honda Security System, which cannot be bypassed. Roughly, including labour, will cost about $2k to replace the system, the ignition switch, and the keys. I reckon ‘d be lucky to sell Betty for $2k if she was running perfectly, so I’ll be farked spending more than she’s worth to fix her, and there is no guarantee that that is the issue, or the fix, as they can’t replicate the problem with consistency. This comes from Honda themselves.
So, I’ve just bought a secondhand 2010 VT750S, with only 4K on the odo, and I’m stoked, picking it up tomorrow after work. Bit more power, so grateful for the extra grunt and she won’t sound like a dentists’ drill at 110kph on the highway.
My question, though, is how compatible are parts between both 2010 models? If i want to transfer the fuel tank from the VT400 (as it is bigger) to the VT750s, can that be done? How about the seat? Pretty sure the panier frame and saddlebags will be an easy straight move! But uncertain re the rest. The VT400 has the tacho built into the tank, but the VT750s has it in the handlebars. Plus, I love the Royal Blue & Pearl White with Red trim combo colour scheme of the VT400.
Anyone get any knowledge/experience with this. I’m not mechanically minded, so don’t have a clue.
Any advice would be appreciated!
PS: The VT750S will be named Pegasus, or “Peggy,” for short.
Cheers! Zorb (aka Wolfish Grin)

Ho Zorb. Nice to hear from you. Congratulations on the "new" bike. I am sure you will get a lot of pleasure with Peggy. I don't know much about the 400 and 750's but everywhere I have read on this forum and also on some of the various honda facebook sites I am on, most parts are compatible with each other. I am sure someone will reply on the forum to set you on the right path.

In this ever increasing Facebook world, I sometimes forget (apparently for a year or two at a time) that we have these forums that I’ve been a long standing member of. Now I’ve just got to remember how to make the pic memory size smaller so I can post pics, but the older I get the less I seem to remember how to do that on a tablet or smartphone too.

Hi mate . Normallyy the 400 and 750 are very compatable . That is in the Aero models however you have the 750s and that is a different setup . Would pay to check before ordering .Pioes should be but the rear brackets may differ Good ride though 👍😀 Cheers Ray

Yep, now that she’s home, i can see that pretty much everything is different. All good though, would’ve just been an added bonus if bits were interchangeable, but still very happy with the ride. Not happy that the place that did the Roadworthy added silencers to the exhaust, because I can’t for the life of me work out how to remove them. Was pretty sure pre-silencer they were under 94db from 30cm. As a shift worker, I don’t want them excessively loud to disturb my neighbours for my comings and goings to/from work at odd hours, but now it’s just a whisper. Any tips? I can’t find any videos on youtube for similar, and as previously stated, I am far from mechanically minded. Simply removing the bolt seems to do nothing.

Can’t see too well from them pics but that looks like a revolving silencer . No spot welds around outside of the inner bit is there . Could drill a 32 mm hole in centre with a hole saw . Have a motorcycle muffler bloke here that would do a good job on it . Must be one there somewhere or try a car muffler shop Cheers Ray

Wasn’t welded in, thankfully, just needed to drill the holes a bit bigger so I could fit a decent screwdriver in and leverage out! All done!, and back to decent sound (not overly loud, but a nice rumble).
