Just some info for anyone who may have been making purchases from the US while the dollar was good. There are considerable delays to due to the massive amount of items to be shipped to Australia (a week ago it was 46,000kg of mail). As you may or may not know, mail is shipped on passenger aircraft but in the current economic climate there isn't enough passenger aircraft to meet the demands of the postal service with all it's parcels. What this means is that there is a large amount of stuff sitting in the US waiting to come to Australia. Australia Post / US Postal Service are trying to clear the backlog with charter aircraft.
Second problem is that this know means there is also a huge increase in the amount of parcels coming into Australia. Our beloved friends in Customs & AQIS are trying to keep up with the volume of mail but are having delays.
So, if you've ordered something and it hasn't turned up yet and it should of, this may be the reason. Just to illustrate, I have 5 orders sitting in Chicago's International Sorting Centre waiting to come to Australia. One item has been sitting there for 3 days and it's an Express item. Another item sat there since the 21st of July and overnight it's finally reached Australia.
In the end 2 week transit time is now blowing out to 5-8 weeks depending upon the size of the article and your luck.

This delay only applies to articles coming from the US and any article arriving in Australia from a foreign postal service. Articles arriving by courier (ie Fedex, UPS, DHL) are still arriving with only minimal delay as long as you don't have the word bullet in the item description (speaking from very recent experience )

There would still be a delay in a parcel going through customs.

Simon, thank for the info mate. ;D. It certainly came in handy today. I managed to pass on the info you gave us to some fellow workers at the mail centre here in Tmba. It is certainly going to save them some heart ache. Had customers looking for parcels that were supposed to have been sent Customer all but accusing them of stealing the item So they can pass on the information that you gave us rather than the shrug of the shoulders that Aust Post gave them. Thanks again
