Last week whilst riding to work the bike suddenly lost power then stopped. After playing around on the side of the road with it I noticed the trip meter was on 206kms so I figured it was out of fuel. I always thought it would do 250 or so before bottoming out but I guess all the stop start here in the suburbs takes it's toll. Anyway, I flicked over to reserve tank & away she went again to the next servo for a drink. Out of curiosity & possibly one day necessity, how far do you think I would get on the reserve tank of an Aero 750?

ok, fuel tank holds 14lts, 3 lts of this is reserve. So callculation is 206 divided by 11 gives you 18.72 kl to the ltr. that gives you 56.16 kl's on reserve thats the theory. Tank size is from my 2007 vt750 aero.
Had something similar to that happen to me a while back when i was battling a strong head wind, ran out of fuel before reserve at 195 kl's and next fuel stop was 25 k away. Just switched over and slowed down because i did not know how far i would get on reserve, made it easy.

I always under estimate and say 40km from reserve tank just in case. the main point is remembering to check the kms when switching over. most important is remembering to switch it back as soon as you fill up else you'll be stuck on the freeway ( or somewhere) with no fuel and a silly grin on your face now.... how do i know that i wonder ??

I've only a light to tell that I'm on reserve. No PetCock! Have travelled just on 50km befor fuelling, heart in mouth all the way. Pams VT400 gets well over 250 per tank and has never had reserve light come on.

Same here Clarry . Depends on how you are riding. 40ks is the most i have done after the light and i had 1/2 litre left upon filling up. Cheers Ray

Ran my ACE to empty to see how far I could get (taking a jerry can of fuel with). Engine stopped at 32 kms after switching to reserve tank so be careful, it seems that not all reserves are the same.

i did just shy of 50kms on reserve on my 05 aero, but that was before playing with the airbox so i dont know what if any difference that would make. also, worthwhile checking the fuel switch every ride. some prick switched mine to off a week or so ago and i didnt notice. i started the bike, waited for the traffic to clear then hit the throttle and after moving about two meters, stalled. really unnerving as there was cars coming up behind quite fast.

"reserve" will vary depending upon the following circumstances: - bike load (ie solo or with pillion, cargo etc) - winds (head wind, tail wind etc) - tyre pressure - road conditions (you will use more fuel on gravel/dirt roads than smooth tar) - traffic (stopping and starting) - road type (highway where you can cruise on a set speed or low speed city roads) - How heavy on the throttle you are
It's good to know how much you roughly get before switching to reserve. Once you switch to reserve, hit the next servo.
It's also good to practice reaching down and switching to reserve. This means that as your riding along and she starts spluttering and coughing you can switch down, flick it over, and then keep going without stopping. This is really important if you have big trucks bearing down on you.

I know exactly what you mean Angel. I'd just got my VT750 (2nd hand) & was riding down the M1 freeway when it coughed & stopped. I didn't know it, but I was on reserve, so now completely out of fuel (with 272kl on the clock). I can tell you, pushing a 240kg bike 2kl down the motorway in summer, is a great way to lose weight

It depends on luck, if your lucky you ride into the servo, if your unlucky you will be pushing it in. My last tank I got 306 klm before hitting reserve the tank before 240 klm. One trip up the Hume I had to go 45 klm on reserve before finding an open servo. The old sphincter was working hard that day ;D
